Writer Suzie Miller discusses the meaning behind 'Inter Alia' and the importance of having those difficult conversations and opening up community conversations. Suzie Miller is an Australian-British playwright, screenwriter, and novelist, with degrees in law, science, and theatre, who has written over 20 full-length plays produced in over 100 productions around the world. She spent years as a practising human rights lawyer before being offered, simultaneously, a judicial position in Australia and a residency at the National Theatre in London — a fork in the road she has described as entirely clear: she chose theatre. Her play Prima Facie — starring Jodie Comer and produced in the West End and on Broadway from 2022 — has been translated into over 30 languages and produced in over 40 countries. Judges in Northern Ireland have been required to watch the NT Live recording before sitting on rape trials, and the play has prompted direct changes to judicial directions in sexual assault cases — the perfect example, as Miller has described it, of art infiltrating the system. Her advice to young playwrights: "Just be truthful to the word and to the story. There's something about a piece of art that can say something to people in a way that a lecture can't. It's not didactic. It goes straight for the guts." Her second NT play, Inter Alia, starring Rosamund Pike as a High Court judge, premiered in 2025 and transferred to the West End.
